Midgard is the name of the world of Normans in the Ragnarök universe.

Geography

The main continent of the world is unnamed and is only known for the 3 countries that reside on it: Rune-Midgard, the Schwartzvald Republic, and the Arunafeltz States. Other countries exist on other unnamed continents as well; these include the cities of Kunlun, Amatsu, Louyang, Ayothaya, Moscovia, Brasilis, Dewata, and Malaya. The entire world changes significantly each time a Ragnarök event happens. Mountains and oceans shift and civilizations evolve or are born anew.

History

Age of Gods
A long time ago, the Thousand-Year War took place, resulting in the deaths of Baldr and Fenrir. During this time, the Jotunn Surt unleashed his minions on the world but was defeated by the Aesir. Freyja manages to prevent Ragnarök, extending the Age of Gods to another 1000 years.

In A.W. (After War) 400, Surt attempts to burn the world again, but instead of the Aesir, Surt was opposed by the lone knight Thanatos. For 10 days and nights, Surt and Thanatos engaged in a battle of epic proportion. Their strikes and blows sundered the earth and shook the heavens. On the last day, Thanatos manages to defeat Surt and seal the jotunn into Midgard's crust, over which a shrine is built to maintain the seal.

In A.W. 995, Fenris' sealed memories were released, prompting her to begin her search for Baldr's reincarnation. Two years passed before Fenris finds the god's reincarnation, who goes by the name Chaos.

In A.W. 997, an attempt was made to free Surt from his prison, but was thwarted by the efforts of the Assassins' Guild.

It is assumed that around A.W. 1000, Chaos and his friends manage to defeat Freyja and her valkyries, sealing Freyja away in her homeworld of Vanaheim. Thus putting an end to the Age of Gods and beginning the Age of Man. (Day of Despair)

Age of Man

Midgard(World)

An expanded world map as seen in Ragnarok Online.

During the Age of Man, the city of Morroc was developed and Schwartzvald entered its industrial age.

Some time into the Age of Man, a second attempt to resurrect Surt was made and succeeded, leading to the utter destruction of Morroc. In his escape, Surt ripped open a dimensional gorge, allowing adventurers to enter a previously unreachable area of the world of Midgard. This place was dubbed the New World. In addition, the Arunafeltz States was discovered and the religious worship of Freyja (Freyjanity) was introduced to the world.

With King Tristan Gaebolg III missing, Sir Pior was appointed as king of Rune-Midgard. His rule did not last for very long, as refugees overthrew King Pior after being agitated with the kingdom's economic affairs. With the abolishment of traditional monarchy, the Republic of Midgard was established, led by President Witold Schurt.

A newly discovered continent known as Svartalf saw its chance and waged war with the Republic of Midgard. The Republic of Midgard lost and became a vassal state of Svartalf.

20 years later, Ignatz Gaebolg leads an independence movement across Midgard and succeeded in gathering the popular support from the continent. This earned them independence from Svartalf and the Rune-Midgard kingdom was re-established under his rule.[1]
